Laptop or Desktop

Nowadays more and more users are moving over to laptops and whilst they do have a lot going for them are they really a good choice?

Laptops

For

  • They are mobile.
  • They are lightweight.
  • They are relatively inexpensive.

Against

  • Because they are mobile, they are more prone to theft and damage through handling.
  • They are slower than desktops.
  • They are prone to overheating.
  • Expensive to repair due to non-interchangeable parts that are unique to different makes/models.
  • Smaller Keyboard/screen can make it more difficult to operate in comparison with a desktop.
  • "Netbooks" do not usually come with a CD/DVD rom, making it more challenging to install software and/or to reload operating system after catastrophic failure.
  • Limited upgrade prospects. Usually only the DVD/CD Rom, RAM, processor and Hard Drive are upgradeable.

    Desktops

    For

    • They are faster when comparing like/like processing power.
    • They are more resilient than laptops.
    • They are relatively inexpensive.
    • Spares are usually interchangeable, depending on the system mainboard.
    • They are upgradeable.

    Against

  • Not mobile.
  • Larger footprint, taking up more space.
